こんにちは。

英検2級の予想トピックを使って英作文を書いてみましょう。今回のトピックは以下の通りです。

Topic: Do you think e-books will become more popular in the future?
電子書籍は将来、もっと人気になると思いますか？

今回はこのトピックで「賛成」サイドの英作文を書いてみましょう。

トピックの概要

電子書籍とはコンピュータなどで読めるデジタル形式の本のことです。最近ではスマホでも電子書籍が読めますね。

学校の教科書などもデジタル化が進み、電子書籍化されています。いずれ紙の本より電子書籍の方が主流になるのでしょうか。

電子書籍・紙の書籍を英語で言うと？

「電子書籍」はいろいろな英単語が使われています。

・electronic book

・e-book

・digital book

一方、「紙の書籍」は何と言うのでしょう。これまで、bookは紙でできているのが当たり前だったので「紙の」と言う必要がありませんでした。しかし電子書籍と比較する際には、次のように言われます。

・real book（本物の本）

・actual book（実際の本）

・printed book（印刷された本）

・paper book（紙の本）

電子書籍のメリット

今回は賛成サイドなので、電子書籍のメリットを考えてみましょう。

紙を使わないので環境に優しい

電子書籍は紙を一切使いません。紙は木から作られ、木は環境にとって貴重な資源ですから、貴重な資源を無駄使いしない点で電子書籍はエコと言えます。

E-books do not require any paper.

Paper is made from wood. wood is one of the important resources.

This means e-books are environmentally friendly.

場所を節約できて、本棚いらず

電子書籍は「電子書籍リーダー」と呼ばれるデバイスに保存できます。Amazonのキンドルなどの電子書籍リーダーには通常、数千冊分の本が保存できます。その結果、場所が節約できます。

You do not need a bookshelf anymore because thousands of e-books can be stored on an e-book reader.

重い本を持ち運ばなくてもよい

重たい本を持ち歩かなくてもいいことも大きなメリットです。旅行先でたくさんの本を読みたい時にも便利ですね。

An e-book reader can hold many e-books. This is convenient when going on a trip.

You do not have to carry many heavy paper books to enjoy reading during the trip.

本屋に行かなくてもオンラインで購入できる

本屋に行かずに本が買えるのはとても便利ですね。近所に本屋がない田舎に住んでいる人にはとても便利です。また、現在コロナの影響で外出できない状況が続いているので、自宅でダウンロードできるe-bookが一気に普及した感がありますね。

People do not have to go to an actual book store. People can buy e-books online and they can be downloaded anytime.

This is quite helpful for people who live in a remote area.

It also helpful when people have to stay home to protect themselves from natural disasters or the spread of infectious diseases.

語学学習に役立つ

外国語の勉強に原書を読むにはe-bookはメリットいっぱいです。キンドルなどのe-book readerには辞書などの便利な機能がたくさんあります。使いこなせば語学力アップにつながります。

An E-book reader is helpful to study foreign languages because e-book readers have useful functions such as dictionaries, flash cards and highlighter.

以上、e-bookのメリットを５つ挙げました。ここから２つ選んで80-100語で賛成サイドの英作文を書いてみましょう。

英作文例

①環境に優しい　②重い本を持たなくても良くて便利　の２つの理由で書きました。

I think e-books will become more popular in the future. I have two reasons to support my opinion. Firstly, e-books do not require any paper. Paper is made from wood, which is an important natural resource, so reading e-books is good for the environment. Secondly, e-books are more convenient than printed books when going on a trip because thousands of e-books can be stored on an e-book reader. Instead of carrying many heavy paper books, people can bring the small e-book reader to enjoy reading during the trip. In conclusion, e-books will become more popular in the future. (98語） – ＜対訳＞私は将来電子書籍がより人気になると思います。その理由は2つあります。第一に、電子書籍は紙を必要としないからです。紙は木材から作られており、木材は重要な天然資源なので、電子書籍を読むことは環境に良いと思います。第二に、電子書籍リーダーには何千冊もの電子書籍が保存できるので、旅行に行く時は電子書籍の方が便利です。重い紙の本を何冊も持ち運ぶ代わりに、小さな電子書籍リーダーを持っていけば旅の間読書を楽しむことができるのです。そういうわけで、電子書籍は今後ますます人気になるでしょう。
