しつこく「伝統工業産業」ネタ第4弾です。
英作文の募集に4名の方から英作文をいただいたのですが、ひとりの方のライティングの内容がよく理解できず、メールで質問をしてみました。
その結果、なぜ分かりにくかったのかが判明しました。そこで、今日はその点をシェアしたいと思います。

| I don’t think that the traditional craftwork industries can survive in modern society. I have two reasons for that.
Perhaps the greatest reason is that technology has advanced too far. People today are offered with various amenities with latest technology implemented with a reasonable price. However, the quality of the handicrafts is incomparable to them despite most of them are cheap. Secondly, traditional skills are being forgotten when craftspeople are forced to live in cities due to their financial situation. Most of them would work in a company, so they find that their skills are trivial. As a result, they will not be passed onto the next generation, and fewer people will be able to use them as time passes by. These are the reasons why I don’t think that the craftwork industries can thrive in modern society. |

メールのやりとりで分かったのですが、Puppycatさんはアメリカ在住の学生さんで、今回準1級を受験予定。さすがに単語の選び方や書き方などがとても中学生とは思えないくらいよく書けています。なので、主に内容的なつっこみをしたいと思います。
理由１がよくわからない
構成は型通りで、Body部分については、理由２はだいたいOKです。
問題はBodyの理由１です。技術と価格についてであることはわかりますが、何が言いたいのかよくわかりませんでした。そこで、理由１は何が言いたいのかメールで質問してみました。
そのお返事で、Puppycatさんの書きたかった理由１は「たとえ伝統工芸業界による製品は安くても、大量生産品はそれらに引けを取らないクオリティだ」だということが判明。
これで、わたしがよく理解できなかった理由がわかりました。
今回のようなネタは、真逆のものと比較するとわかりやすいストーリーになります。今回のネタであれば、伝統工芸品vs大量生産品。その内容がすこし違っているため、わかりにくくなっていました。
伝統工芸品＝高品質・高価格
一般的に、伝統工芸品は高品質・高価格です。
例えば、伝統的な技術で作られた包丁。ハイクオリティですっと切れる。でも高い。
一方、100均で買えるような包丁。安いけど、すぐ切れなくなる。

Puppycatさんは、伝統工芸品は安い、と思っていたのですね。
現代では、人件費や技術料が一番お金がかかります。
人間の手作業が中心になる伝統工芸では、人件費が高いため、どうしても価格が高くなってしまうのです。
一方、大量生産できる工場なら、価格はどんどん下がっていきます。
伝統工芸品と大量生産品を品質と価格の2点で比較すると、理由がひきたちます。
現代の大量生産品＝高品質・低価格
現在では技術によって、大量生産品の品質が伝統工芸品にひけをとらなくなってきている現状があります。しかも、お値段はそのまま（安い）。そのため、伝統工芸品の競争力が低下しつつある、とストーリーを展開することができます。

理由1部分を
現代企業が生産に技術を追及してきた結果、量産品が高品質・低価格になり、逆に伝統工芸品の競争力が低下している
という風に変えてみました。
理由２部分も後半のわかりにくいところをクリアにしてみました。

The quality of mass-produced items has become comparable to that of handicrafts manufactured by artisans, but the prices are much lower. As a result, mass products have been gaining their competitiveness regarding both quality and prices. Secondly, traditional skills are being forgotten when craftspeople are forced to live in cities due to their financial situation. Most of them would work in a company, so they find that their skills are trivial. As a result, they will not be passed onto the next generation, and fewer people will be able to use them as time passes by.（この部分を書き換え→）Consequently, their art and skills are being lost forever without being handed down to the next generation. These are the reasons why I don’t think that the craftwork industries can thrive in modern society. |

・代名詞（theyなど）では何を指しているのかがわかりにくい場合は、明確な表現に変える

Puppycatさん、理由２はわかりやすくかけているので、元の英作文も悪くないと思います。6行目の despite は前置詞なので、文(SV)をつなぐことができません。文をつなぐときは、althoughなどの接続詞を使いましょう。
